About the role 

The Technical Writer will compile, develop, and manage technical documentation across various product lines, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with industry standards. Working closely with engineering and project teams, the successful candidate will translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and accessible documentation. This role requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary environment.

 

Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum diploma in Publishing, Business Information Sciences, Engineering, or IT (a degree or similar qualification is advantageous).

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in technical writing or documentation-related roles.

  • Experience working with technical writing standards (e.g., ASD STE100 or similar) is beneficial.

  • Editorial or proofreading experience is advantageous.

  • Ability to follow clearly specified rules and procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks efficiently with minimal impact on project deadlines.

Key technical skills

  • Ability to create accurate, clear, and user-friendly technical documentation.

  • Proficiency reviewing and validating documentation for accuracy, technical depth, and completeness.

  • Strong understanding of documentation standards, including ISO, MIL-STD, and DEFSTAN.

  • Ability to translate engineering inputs into structured and standardized documentation.

  • Competence in document control, version management, and applying security protocols.

  • Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and provide clear communication on documentation requirements.

 


Key responsibilities

1. Compile Technical Manuals

  • Work closely with engineers to collect and translate complex technical data.

  • Prepare manuals, guides, procedures, and specifications aligned with project requirements.

  • Continuously update documentation to reflect product changes.

  • Adhere to documentation standards and ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance.

  • Manage document versions and apply all necessary revisions.

  • Ensure classified information is protected and handled according to security guidelines.

2. Conduct Technical Research

  • Perform in-depth research to accurately document product functionality and workflows.

  • Participate in product testing and validation to ensure documentation reflects actual performance.

  • Support internal teams and customers by addressing documentation-related queries.

  • Provide technical advice on documentation processes where applicable.

3. Process Improvement and Innovation 

  • Identify and implement best practices, tools and innovative methods to streamline documentation workflows and improve content quality.

  • Collect and apply feedback from users and stakeholders to continuously improve the relevance and effectiveness of documentation. 

  • Edit and update technical content to ensure it remains accurate, consistent and easy to understand. 

  • Perform routine audits of documentation to align content with the latest product features and updates. 

  • Leverage content management systems (CMS) to efficiently organise, update and control access to technical documentation.
