PCB Design Engineer
PCB Design Engineer
Pretoria, ZA
About the role
We are seeking a highly experienced PCB Design Engineer to take technical ownership of complex printed circuit board (PCB) designs across multiple product lines. This role goes beyond layout execution and requires strong engineering judgement in signal integrity, power integrity, RF, thermal management, and manufacturability.
The successful candidate will drive PCB design from concept and architecture through to production release, ensuring compliance with industry standards, manufacturability, and product performance.
Qualification & experience
Minimum:
- BEng / BSc (Electronic Engineering) or equivalent.
-
8-10 years professional PCB design experience in a product development environment.
Required experience:
- Multi-layer, high-density PCB design.
-
RF, high-speed digital, and mixed-signal layouts.
-
Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
-
Signal integrity, impedance control, and thermal considerations.
-
Working with manufacturing partners and managing fabrication/assembly constraints.
Key technical skills:
-
Expert-level proficiency in PCB design tools (e.g. Altium Designer or equivalent).
-
Strong understanding of IPC standards and PCB manufacturing processes.
-
Proven capability in:
-
Signal integrity and controlled impedance design
-
Power integrity and grounding strategies
-
EMC/EMI-aware layout practices
-
Thermal management at board level
-
-
Ability to interpret and contribute to electronic schematics and system-level designs.
-
Strong documentation, revision control, and configuration management discipline.
Key Responsibilities
1. PCB Engineering & Design Ownership
-
Own PCB design from concept, architecture input, and schematic collaboration through to final layout and release.
-
Translate system and circuit requirements into robust, manufacturable PCB designs.
-
Design complex multi-layer boards including RF, high-speed, and mixed-signal systems.
-
Act as technical authority for PCB layout quality, performance, and compliance.
2. Engineering Governance & Quality
-
Define and enforce PCB design standards, guidelines, and best practices.
-
Lead and chair PCB design reviews and technical gate reviews.
-
Ensure compliance with IPC standards, internal design rules, and product lifecycle requirements.
-
Take accountability for layout-related technical risks and mitigation strategies.
3. Manufacturing & Supplier Interface
-
Work directly with PCB manufacturers and assemblers on stack-ups, tolerances, and process constraints.
-
Resolve DFM/DFA issues and drive yield, quality, and cost optimisation.
-
Support procurement and production with technical input on fabrication and assembly challenges.
4. Documentation & Configuration Control
-
Ensure complete and accurate release packs: layouts, fabrication data, assembly data, and BOMs.
-
Maintain strict version control and design traceability across product revisions.
5. Technical Leadership & Mentorship
- Mentor and technically guide junior and mid-level PCB designers/technicians.
