About the Role

Are you passionate about product robustness and environmental compliance? Join our dynamic team as an Environmental Test Technician, where you will play a critical role in the execution of physical environmental testing on GEW products. Working closely with engineering teams, you’ll be instrumental in identifying, diagnosing, and resolving product failures during rigorous environmental assessments.

This role demands hands-on experience in environmental standards and testing methodologies, ensuring that products meet the highest standards before release. Be the crucial link between testing outcomes and design improvements, and contribute directly to the delivery of robust, regulation-compliant technologies.

 

Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum Diploma in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering; Preferred qualification Advanced Diploma in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering or similar qualification. 
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience; Preferred 5 years’ experience in environmental testing and robust product design.
  • Strong background in interpreting test outcomes and contributing to design compliance.

 

Key technical skills

  • Strong knowledge of environmental compliance standards (e.g. MIL-STD-810, DEF STANs, RTCA/DO-160).
  • Skilled in executing tests including:
    • Vibration
    • Shock
    • Temperature & Humidity
    • Thermal Cycling
    • Salt Spray
    • Ingress Protection (IP)
  • Ability to interpret results and assess regulatory compliance.
  • Proficient in failure analysis, root cause methodologies, and structured reporting.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical systems, materials behaviour, and assembly tolerances under stress.

 

Key responsibilities

1. Environmental testing execution

  • Plan, schedule, and conduct tests per commercial and military standards (e.g. MIL-STD-810, IEC 60068).
  • Determine and recommend equipment upgrades for compliance with new specifications.
  • Develop and refine test procedures to ensure accuracy and repeatability.

2. Engineering support and design compliance

  • Collaborate with design engineers to identify failure modes and recommend engineering fixes.
  • Actively contribute to design reviews, ensuring all environmental compliance aspects are addressed.

3. Test planning and documentation

  • Prepare and manage test plans and schedules.
  • Generate detailed, timely test reports for type approval and compliance records.
  • Track corrective actions and actively participate in technical discussions.

4. External test and stakeholder coordination

  • Coordinate with external labs for offsite testing; occasional local travel required.
  • Ensure external testing meets budget, deadlines, and regulatory expectations.
  • Support project and sales teams with technical input for quotes and compliance validation.

5. Equipment management and technical consultancy

  • Maintain calibration and maintenance schedules for test equipment.
  • Promote awareness of environmental testing throughout the business.
  • Ensure maximum uptime and availability of equipment.
