Senior Electronic Engineer
Senior Electronic Engineer
Irene, ZA
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Electronic Engineer to design, develop, and industrialise advanced electronic products within the HESOLDT Optronics product portfolio. This role requires an engineer who can operate as a design authority for complex subsystems or functional areas, taking full accountability for technical performance across the entire product life cycle, from concept and architecture through to qualification and production support.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform high-level engineering analysis, system-oriented design, simulation, prototyping, verification, and industrialisation, while working closely with system, mechanical, industrial, and manufacturing engineering teams. This is not a support role. It is a delivery and ownership role for engineers who can carry technical responsibility in a regulated, high-reliability product environment.
Qualification & experience
- Minimum BEng Electronic Engineering; Preferred BEng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering (or equivalent).
- Minimum 5 years’; Preferably 7 years’ experience in electronic hardware development within a product development environment.
- Proven experience taking designs from concept through to production.
- Experience operating as a technical owner or design authority for subsystems or critical design areas is strongly preferred.
- Exposure to full product life cycle engineering, including design reviews, industrialisation, and production support.
Key technical skills
- Strong grounding in electronic engineering fundamentals, including analogue, digital, and mixed-signal design.
- Proven capability in engineering analysis, simulation, and design validation (e.g. SPICE, MATLAB, modelling tools).
- Experience with high-speed digital design, EMC/EMI design principles, and reliability engineering (e.g. derating, FMEA, HALT).
- Proficiency with modern engineering design and development toolchains, such as:
- CAD and PCB design tools (e.g. Altium Designer, HyperLynx or similar)
- FPGA / firmware toolchains (e.g. Vivado, ModelSim, Xilinx SDK, HDL tools)
- Strong competence in design documentation, configuration control, and engineering data pack creation.
- Solid understanding of manufacturing technologies, test equipment, and industrialisation requirements.
- Ability to define, maintain, and evolve engineering standards, libraries, and best practices.
Key responsibilities
1. Task Planning and Engineering Ownership
- Define and agree the scope of work, deliverables, schedules, and technical outputs in collaboration with project, system, and line management.
- Take full responsibility for execution of assigned engineering work packages, including reporting deviations and managing technical risks.
- Ensure work is properly scoped, authorised, reviewed, and executed in line with defined engineering processes and review gates.
2. Design and Development
- Apply structured design and development processes to generate concepts that meet functional, performance, and life cycle requirements.
- Perform conceptual and detailed design, supported by modelling, simulation, and engineering analysis.
- Take technical accountability for design performance across the full product life cycle.
- Select and specify appropriate manufacturing technologies, components, and materials.
- Drive designs through PDR, CDR, and detail design phases, including generation of complete manufacturing data packs.
- Define tolerances, perform verification and validation testing, and ensure designs are fit for purpose before release.
- Develop and improve design methods, tools, libraries, and engineering processes to improve quality and reduce cycle time.
3. Industrialisation and Production Support
- Collaborate with industrial and manufacturing engineering to ensure designs are producible, testable, and supportable.
- Design and develop test equipment, tooling, and assembly procedures aligned to design intent, quality, and efficiency.
- Support production with debugging, fault finding, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Train production personnel and support transfer of products into manufacturing.
4. General Engineering and Technical Leadership
- Break down system and user requirements into clear, implementable design requirements at subsystem and component level.
- Ensure all design data is technically correct, complete, reviewed, and properly controlled.
- Investigate and apply new technologies, components, and methods to improve product performance, cost, and manufacturability.
- Work with suppliers and procurement to identify, qualify, and implement suitable technologies and processes.
- Proactively ensure knowledge transfer through documentation, mentoring, and peer reviews.
- Perform laboratory testing, qualification testing, and engineering investigations to de-risk and mature designs.
5. Sub-System Engineering Responsibility
- Take responsibility for technical planning, execution oversight, and engineering integrity of assigned subsystems.
- Perform architectural design, including block diagrams, power, grounding, interfaces, timing, and life cycle considerations.
- Ensure integration across disciplines and alignment with system-level requirements.
- Support technical risk management, development strategies, and design readiness for major reviews and milestones.
