About the role

We are seeking a skilled Operator at our HENSOLDT Optronics business unit to perform precision manufacturing tasks that contribute to the delivery of high-quality optical components for internal requirements and external customers. The role involves process preparation, grinding, polishing, tooling setup, cleaning, and basic machine upkeep, with a strong focus on quality, yield, and 5S standards.

Qualification and experience

• Matric or N3.

• 1–2 years’ experience in a hands-on manufacturing environment requiring fine motor skills and attention to detail
  
  

Key technical skills

• Mathematics:

  • Math Literacy 70%+ or

  • Mathematics 55%+

• Ability to read and interpret technical/manufacturing drawings

• Good hand-eye coordination

• Basic understanding of optical theory (advantageous)

• Basic computer literacy

Key responsibilities:

Process Preparation and Cleaning

• Set up and prepare tools, jigs, and fixtures for manufacturing processes in accordance with work instructions.

• Apply the correct gluing or clamping process for each production step.

• Clean optical components after processing using the specified cleaning methods.

• Ensure proper upkeep and basic maintenance of tools, jigs, and fixtures.

Grinding

• Use the relevant tools and grinding powders to prepare components for polishing.

• Ensure thickness, sphere, wedge, and surface finish meet the required standards for the next process step.

Polishing

• Operate polishing equipment (single spindle polishers, hand polishing, single or double lap machines) to achieve required specifications.

• Ensure tooling preparation, machine cleanliness, correct slurry density, and chemical composition are maintained as part of daily duties.

General

• Meet daily production targets as set by the Supervisor.

• Maintain high 5S standards at the workstation.

• Ensure quality and yield standards are achieved in accordance with drawing specifications.

• Perform basic machine cleaning and maintenance.
