About the Role 

HENSOLDT South Africa is seeking a talented and innovative Mechanical Engineer to join our Optronics Engineering team. This role is responsible for supporting the development, industrialisation and lifecycle management of advanced mechanical products and systems. Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will apply mechanical engineering principles, design methodologies and product lifecycle practices to develop reliable, manufacturable and high-quality solutions that meet customer, technical and business requirements.

Qualifications and experience: 

  • BEng in Mechanical Engineering. 

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in mechanical product design, development and industrialisation within a product development or manufacturing environment. 

  • Experience with CAD modelling, engineering simulation and design analysis tools. 

  • Experience in engineering verification, testing, manufacturing support and product lifecycle management. 

  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering project teams. 

 

Key technical skills: 

  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, mathematics and physical sciences. 

  • Mechanical product design, development and lifecycle engineering. 

  • 3D CAD modelling and engineering drawing standards. 

  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA), structural, thermal and dynamic analysis. 

  • Engineering simulation, modelling and rapid prototyping techniques. 

  • Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA). 

  • Manufacturing processes, tooling, jigs, fixtures and industrialisation techniques. 

  • Materials engineering, material selection and surface treatment technologies. 

  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance analysis. 

  • Configuration management and engineering change control. 

  • Product verification, testing, qualification and validation methodologies. 

  • Product lifecycle management and engineering documentation. 

  • Engineering calculations using analytical and simulation tools. 

  • Technical report writing and engineering documentation. 

  • Proficiency in engineering software including Creo/Pro-E, ANSYS, Creo Simulate, FloEFD, MATLAB, Python and MathCAD. 

  • Supplier technical evaluation and manufacturing process optimisation. 

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Mechanical Design and Product Development: Design, develop and optimise mechanical products and assemblies by applying engineering principles, modelling techniques and lifecycle methodologies to deliver innovative, reliable and manufacturable solutions that meet customer, technical and business requirements. 

  • Engineering Planning and Project Execution: Plan and execute engineering activities by defining project scope, deliverables, schedules, technical requirements and resource needs to achieve project objectives within quality, cost and time constraints. 

  • Product Industrialisation and Manufacturing Support: Develop manufacturing solutions by designing tooling, fixtures, assembly processes, test equipment and production documentation while supporting supplier development and production activities to enable efficient, repeatable and high-quality manufacturing. 

  • Engineering Verification, Configuration and Technical Support: Verify and maintain mechanical designs through engineering analysis, prototype evaluations, testing, fault investigations, configuration management and technical support to ensure product compliance, design integrity and operational performance throughout the product lifecycle. 

  • Continuous Engineering Improvement and Technical Innovation: Drive engineering excellence by researching new technologies, materials and manufacturing methods while improving engineering standards, technical documentation and design practices to enhance product performance, engineering capability and organisational competitiveness.
