About the role
The Coatings Supervisor is a hands-on technical leader responsible for supervising production operations in a precision optical coating environment. This role combines deep technical accountability with first-line people management. You will ensure production equipment readiness, drive quality output, maintain delivery performance, and upskill your team while enforcing strict safety and quality standards. You are accountable for coating processes, inspection integrity, maintenance execution, and daily production performance.
Qualifications and experience

Minimum Technical qualification; Preferably a Diploma in Mechatronics or similar qualification.

Minimum 5 years’ technical experience in a manufacturing/production environment in a supervisory and machine maintenance role.

Proven experience in production line management (formal supervisory training advantageous).

Strong background in equipment maintenance, fault finding, and process control.
Key technical skills
-
Strong technical leadership in a production environment.

Experience with PLC, pneumatic and vacuum systems, including fault finding.

Ability to read and interpret drawings, procedures, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions.

Strong reporting and documentation skills.
-
Proven ability to make critical decisions under pressure while maintaining safety and quality.

Excellent time management and ability to deliver against strict deadlines.
Key responsibilities

Production and Process execution
-
Lead and execute precision coating processes to drawing and routing specifications.
-
Select, control, and continuously improve manufacturing processes, tools, jigs, and fixtures.

Ensure correct process usage to optimise quality, cost, delivery, and safety.

Equipment and Maintenance management
-
Ensure operational readiness of all production equipment in the coating department.

Supervise internal and contractor maintenance activities.
-
Perform and train others on specialised maintenance (with OEM support where required).

Quality and Inspection management
-
Take full accountability for daily quality output.

Ensure correct inspection processes, equipment availability, and calibration.

Drive continuous improvement to prevent non-conforming product and enforce standards (5S, ATPs, quality systems, Kanban, etc.).

Production Planning and Delivery performance
-
Plan and execute production schedules based on demand and stock levels.

Allocate resources, manage workflow, track inventory, and control consumables.

Ensure on-time delivery, accurate reporting, and performance tracking.

People Leadership and Capability development
-
Coach, motivate, and manage the team against Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery, and Morale targets.

Conduct regular performance discussions and manage leave, discipline, recruitment, induction, and performance reviews.

Define and execute technical upskilling and on-the-job training for all direct reports.
