About the role
The Business Management Systems Manager is responsible for ensuring the organisation’s continued ISO, EN, and AS certification by developing and implementing robust policies, managing internal and supplier audits, and coordinating third-party audits. The role drives continuous improvement across the Business Management System (BMS) by supporting strategic governance, certification management, capability enablement, and people leadership.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum Diploma in Quality Management (e.g., City & Guilds of London Institute or American Society of Quality Controllers (ASQC)).
- Preferably an undergraduate degree in Engineering or Quality Management.
- EN9100 Lead Auditor or equivalent training (mandatory), plus ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and OHS Act No. 85 training.
- Ideally, a qualification in Aviation, Space, and Defence (ASD) Lead Auditor course from a recognised training body.
- 5–10 years’ experience applying safety, health, environmental, and quality systems in high-complexity defence system development and production environments.
- Experience in design, manufacturing, and after-sales support environments; exposure to optical, mechanical, and/or electronic design and electro-optical products is advantageous.
- Knowledge of best practices in quality control, quality assurance, and HSE management techniques.
Key Technical Skills
- In-depth understanding of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, EN9100, and relevant compliance frameworks.
- Strong audit management skills, including internal, supplier, and external audits.
- Competence in BMS/EMS design, implementation, and improvement.
- Advanced report writing, documentation control, and compliance analysis.
- Ability to develop and deliver targeted training programs, including Safety Management System (SMS) and Human Factors awareness.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and performance management abilities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Certification Management

Maintain ISO 14001, EN9100, and other relevant certifications by managing interfaces with Certification Bodies and customers.

Build strategic relationships with Certification Bodies to ensure alignment and compliance.

Plan, schedule, and manage annual and reassessment audits, ensuring readiness across business units.

Coordinate all audit communications, opening/closing meetings, agendas, and objectives.

Act as the primary liaison during audits to ensure seamless execution and issue resolution.

Review and analyse external audit reports, communicate findings, and implement corrective actions for future readiness.
2. Strategic Audit and Certification Governance

Support the Quality Management function in establishing, improving, and reviewing the BMS.

Identify compliance risks and gaps in relation to ISO 14001, ISO 9001, EN9100, ISO 45001, and OHSA requirements.

Design and update BMS templates, policies, and procedures, ensuring authorised approvals and implementation.

Review and revise documentation in response to identified compliance risks.

Engage in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to stay current with evolving standards and innovative quality practices.
3. Capability and Quality Awareness Enablement

Source and coordinate external training providers for official programmes.

Deliver and roll out Safety Management System (SMS) and Human Factors awareness training across the organisation.

Design and deliver training to prevent Foreign Object Debris/Damage (FOD) and enhance operational discipline.

Implement targeted training to ensure compliance with regulatory, customer, and organisational requirements.

Promote awareness of Key Characteristics (KCs) and traceability requirements.

Develop a BMS awareness culture through internal communications and ensure effective application of BMS documentation.
4. People Management and Leadership

Manage employee-related matters including leave, discipline, recruitment, induction, and performance evaluations.

Adjust manpower levels to meet operational needs and coordinate overtime requirements.

Coach and motivate teams to achieve targets in delivery, quality, cost, and customer service.

Conduct quarterly performance and development discussions with direct reports.

Collaborate with HR to resolve grievances through innovative problem-solving.

Implement talent management and succession planning strategies with HR and line management.
