About the role

The Facilities & Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Lead is responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of all facilities across the organisation. The role drives maintenance, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation while supporting sustainability, operational continuity, and a safe working environment.

 

Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum NQF 6 qualification in Health, Safety & Environmental Management, Facilities Management, or Engineering.
  • Relevant certifications or training in ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993), including incident/accident investigation.
  • 3–5 years’ experience in facilities management and HSE within a business environment.
  • Experience managing regulated sites (e.g., SAPS, SACAA) is advantageous.

 

Key technical skills

  • Strong knowledge of HSE systems, compliance standards, and quality assurance practices.
  • Solid understanding of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire, structural, and access control).
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements including SANS 10400, property law, and OEM standards.
  • Experience in facilities operations, maintenance, and contractor management.
  • Financial acumen with experience managing budgets, costs, and service contracts.

 

Key responsibilities

1. HSE Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and OHS Act requirements across all sites.
  • Maintain audit readiness and drive closure of non-conformances through effective corrective actions.
  • Implement risk management processes (HIRA, ALARP) to minimise operational and safety risks.

2. Facilities & Infrastructure Management

  • Ensure optimal performance, maintenance, and reliability of all facility infrastructure and systems.
  • Maintain compliance with building regulations, safety standards, and OEM requirements.
  • Oversee site services (cleaning, waste, utilities) to support a safe and efficient working environment.

3. Contractor & Vendor Management

  • Ensure contractors deliver services in line with quality, safety, and compliance standards.
  • Manage service level agreements, performance, and adherence to contractual requirements.
  • Drive effective coordination between contractors and internal stakeholders.

4. Financial & Capex Management

  • Manage operational budgets and ensure cost-effective facilities and maintenance solutions.
  • Plan and deliver Capex projects (repairs, upgrades, renovations) within budget and timelines.
  • Monitor and control costs while identifying opportunities for efficiency and savings.

5. Governance, Sustainability & Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and internal governance requirements.
  • Drive sustainability initiatives and monitor environmental performance metrics.
  • Provide accurate reporting on facilities performance, risks, costs, and compliance status.

6. People Management & Leadership

  • Lead and manage the team across recruitment, performance management, and development processes.
  • Align workforce capacity with operational needs through effective resource and manpower planning.
  • Foster a high-performance culture through coaching, engagement, and collaboration with HR on employee relations and succession planning.
